Cycle B Lectionary 10 Proper 5

6/7/2015 Confession

Sunday Title:  Authority Sunday
Sermon Title: Mind Tricks

Previously:

Scripture Cuttings:
Genesis 3:8-15 "Who told you that you were naked?
Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?"
Psalm 130 If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand?
2 Corinthians 4:13-5:1 we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will bring us with you into his presence. Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends to more and more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.
Mark 3:20-35 "Who are my mother and my brothers?" And looking at those who sat around him, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother."

All may make the sign of the cross in remembrance of baptism
as the presiding minister begins:
P:  In the Name of the Father, and the Son, + and the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen

P:  If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, who could stand?
(pause for self-examination)
P:  Lord God,
C: We fear your presence.
  We hide from you with useless rationalizations;
masks inside our minds, distorted intentions,
avoiding the close relationship you desire,
We dodge responsibility for our actions.
  We blame, trick, conspire.
We can recognize power
but we do not value authority.
We make adversaries, and keep grudges.
We call evil, good; when it suits our purpose,
and when it does not suit, then good is evil.
Still we can not tell these two apart.
And we tolerate only the tolerant.
Who would befriend us?

P:  With the Lord there is steadfast love and great power to redeem.
C: Forgive us the sins we name.
Save us from the sins we hide. (pause for self-examination)

P:  Because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will bring us into his presence, we may know God’s steadfast love. For Christ’s sake our sins are forgiven. Through the Holy Spirit we may extend this grace to more and more people, and our thanksgiving may increase; to the glory of the Father, and the Son, + and the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen. -wjw

P:  The peace of the Lord be with you always!
C: And also with you!

Cycle B Holy Trinity

5/31/2015 Confession

Sunday Title:  Holy Trinity Sunday
Sermon Title: Understanding? God.

Previously:
Sunday Title:  Worship Sunday
Sermon Title: Worship vs. Denial vs. Worship
Sunday Title:  Holy Trinity Sunday
Sermon Title: “Welcome Pastor Jim Brandis Chaplain at Shepherd of the Valley”
Sunday Title:  Holy Trinity Father's Day Sunday
Sermon Title: "Put me in coach, I'm ready to play"
Sunday Title:  The Holy Trinity, Father’s Day
Sermon Title: Sunday School Recognition Sunday, “Safety Zone”

Scripture Cuttings:
Isaiah 6:1-8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I; send me!"
Psalm 29 Give to the Lord glory and power. Give to the Lord the glory his name deserves. Worship the Lord in his holy splendor.
Romans 8:12-17 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption.
John 3:1-17 The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.

All may make the sign of the cross in remembrance of baptism
as the presiding minister begins:
P:  In the Name of the Father, and the Son, + and the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen

P:  Woe to us,
C: for we are unclean,
and we live among the unclean,
How can we approach the Holy? (pause for self-examination)
P:  Lord God,
C: only you can blot out our sin and make our guilt depart,
but foolishly, we try to redeem ourselves.
We have memorized the Church’s doctrine
and accept the tri - unity of Father, Son, + and Holy Spirit,
    but instead of knowing You,
      we choose knowledge about God:
We evade the relationship you reveal.
We seek your truth, yes we are here,
but we don’t take the risk of bearing witness to the truth.
Some sins we understand enough to name; forgive us Lord.
Some sins we hide; save us Lord. (pause for self-examination)
P:  God reveals divinity to us mortals. We call the Almighty: “Abba! Father!”, God a heavenly “Papa” giving an only son, for our salvation. For Christ's sake our sins are forgiven, relationship restored, born of the water and the Spirit, released from slavery to sin, adopted into God’s family, made by love: Children of God for the glory of the Father, and the Son, + and the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen. -wjw

P:  The peace of the Lord be with you always!
C: And also with you!

Cycle B Pentecost

5/24/2015 Confession(2)

Sunday Title:  Pentecost & Memorial Sunday
Sermon Title: Sighs too deep for words.

Previously:
Sunday Title:  Pentecost Memorial Sunday
Sermon Title: What keeps us from hearing the Spirit of Truth?
Sunday Title:  Pentecost Sunday
Sermon Title: “Gentle Spirit”
Sunday Title:  Pentecost Sunday
Sermon Title: "Sighs too deep for words...."
Sunday Title:  Pentecost Sunday,
Sermon Title: “Conventional Methods, Unconventional Results”

Scripture Cuttings:
Ezekiel 37:1-14 Mortal, can these bones live?
Acts 2:1-21 "...we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power." All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" ... the coming of the Lord's great and glorious day. "Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved."
Psalm 104:24-35 When you send forth your spirit, they are created; and you renew the face of the ground. May the glory of the Lord endure forever.
Romans 8:22-27 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words.
John 15:26-27, 16:4b-15 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

All may make the sign of the cross in remembrance of baptism
as the presiding minister begins:
P:  In the Name of the Father, and the Son, + and the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen

P:  Lord, our sin lays as a valley of dry bones before you.
(pause; taking our next breath as a Spirit gift from God)
P:  Lord...
C: you call us to righteousness and justice.
and you give us the Spirit of truth.
But we refuse the love you offer in these gifts,
by seeking our own kingdoms and security.
We chase explanations of what went wrong,
rather than visions of your glory in our future.
We write new rules to prevent old problems,
instead of seeing the aim of faithfulness.
Can these bones of ours live?
We can barely name these sins, forgive us Lord,
only you can save us from the sins we evade.
  (pause for reflection and self-examination)
P:  It is only through the power of the Holy Spirit that we may look deep enough into ourselves to repent fully before God. Fortunately for us, God provides the Spirit. The Advocate reveals the truth of God’s great love in Jesus Christ. It is for Christ’s sake that our sins are forgiven. Now, with sins forgiven, the Spirit may guide us into all truth and we will know the glory of the Father, and the Son, + and the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen. -wjw

P:  The peace of the Lord be with you always!
C: And also with you!

-or-
All may make the sign of the cross in remembrance of baptism
as the presiding minister begins:
P:  In the Name of the Father, and the Son, + and the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen

P:  Can we hope for words to pray as we ought?
C: The Holy Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words.
  (take a spiritual sigh)
P:  Lord God
C: we have more spirit for our favorite team,
than desire for your Holy Spirit.
We claim to believe in the work of the Son,
but we do not trust the power of the Holy Spirit.
Even when our own abilities are clearly not enough,
we choose to rely on ourselves,
and decline the advantage given in the Spirit.
We fail to listen when we do the Holy work of your Church.
We will not call upon your power even when we fall into temptation.
Save us from the sins we know in our heart.
Save us from the sins we hide. (pause for reflection and self-examination)

Cycle B Easter 7

5/17/2015 Confession

Sunday Title:  Prayer Sunday
Sermon Title: Jesus is praying for us!

Previously:
Sunday Title:  World Sunday
Sermon Title: Where in the world is Jesus sending us?
Sunday Title:  Memorial Day & Prayer Sunday
Sermon Title: “A Prayer for Us”
Sunday Title:  Witness Sunday
Sermon Title: "The Complete Witness "
Sunday Title:  Home Sunday,
Sermon Title: “Strangers in a Familiar Land”  “In but not Of”

Scripture Cuttings:
Acts 1:15-17, 21-26 Then they prayed and said, "Lord, you know everyone's heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place."
Psalm 1 They are like trees planted by streams of water, bearing fruit in due season, with leaves that do not wither, everything they do shall prosper.
1 John 5:9-13 And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life....
John 17:6-19 All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.

All may make the sign of the cross in remembrance of baptism
as the presiding minister begins:
P:  In the Name of the Father, and the Son, + and the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen

P:  Lord, you know everyone’s heart.
(Lord you know my heart better than I do)
P:  Lord...
C: we speak of you as the foundation of life
but where do we center our living?
we choose to belong to the world,
    not to belong to you,
      the world is more fun!
We do not intend to be servants of Jesus,
rather, we pursue our own pleasures,
and the joy of Christ is not within us.
Christ prayed for us to be one,
but even in this church we separate ourselves,
young or old, just family and friends, member from stranger.
who could see the truth of your word in us?
These are the sins we can name, forgive us Lord,
and You must save us from the sins we hide.
  (pause for reflection and self-examination)
P:  God chooses forgiveness. The Lord is risen!
C: He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

P:  Our risen Lord has secured our salvation. For Christ’s sake our sins are forgiven. We are sanctified in Christ, in truth and love. We may now be in the world but no longer of the world. It is now God’s testimony in our hearts. And we are chosen apostles: messengers of this love to the glory of the Father, and the Son, + and the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen. -wjw

P:  The peace of the Lord be with you always!

C: And also with you!
