9/29/2013 Confession

Sunday Title: Versatile Sunday
Sermon Title: Improving our view point.

Previously:
Sunday Title: Chasm Sunday
Sermon Title: You can’t get there from here.
Sunday Title: Ally Sunday
Sermon Title: “Who is our helper?”

Scripture Cuttings:
Amos 6:1a & 4-7 Alas for those who are at ease in Zion.
Psalm 146 Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God,
1 Timothy 6:6-19 But those who want to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains.
Luke 16:19-31 Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames.

Confession:
All may make the sign of the cross in remembrance of baptism
as the presiding minister begins:
P:  In the Name of the Father, and the Son, + and the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen

P:  God is our witness, let us make good confession. (pause)
  Almighty God,
C: We know it is you who made heaven and earth,
the seas, and all that is in them,
yet we are not grieved at the ruin of the work of your hand.
In our pursuit of security and contentment
we trap ourselves in harmful desires.
We look down upon the rich
only to set our hope on things uncertain.
We ignore the poor only to secure things for ourselves.
We do not use our lives to confess your saving power.
Forgive us Lord for the sins we know in our heart.
Save us Lord from the sins we hide.
  (pause for reflection and self-examination)
P:  Lord...
C: convince our minds and our hearts. Amen
P:  God keeps promises forever. In Christ, God does what no person could hope. The great chasm between our sinfulness and God’s righteousness is bridged. For Christ’s sake our sins are forgiven. We are blessed with the Holy Spirit so that we may take hold of the life that really is life. To the glory of the name of the Father, and the Son, + and the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen -wjw

P:  The peace of the Lord be with you always!
C: And also with you!
