Sermon Title: The sure sign of forgiveness is (fill in the blank)
Scripture Cuttings:
2 Samuel 11:26-12:10, 13-15 Nathan said to David, “You are the man!”
Psalm 32 Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity.
Galatians 2:15-21 I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me.
Luke 7:36-8:3 A certain creditor had two debtors; one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they could not pay, he canceled the debts for both of them. Now which of them will love him more?
Confession:
All may make the sign of the cross in remembrance of baptism
as the presiding minister begins:
P: In the Name of the Father, and the Son, + and the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen
P: Things we have done displease the Lord.
Let us acknowledge our sin. (pause for self-examination)
P: Almighty God...
C: when it comes to forgiveness,
we never examine our need,
we are slow to seek,
and we won't beg,
after all we are good Christians.
We quickly lay your mercy
over top the apathy of our disloyalty.
We discount the repentance
of really big sinners,
and we have no gratitude
for your steadfast love.
Forgive us the sins we see.
Open our eyes to the sins we hide. Save us Lord.
(Pause for reflection)
P: It is Christ who saves us! It is his faithfulness that justifies, that makes us righteous, that brings us God's mercy. Our sins are forgiven. How can we sin again, when we know our sins are forgiven? Wouldn't that make Christ, our Savior, a slave to our sin? Preposterous! We must let Christ live in us, so that our lives will be lived in the faith of the Son of God. To the glory of the Father, and the Son, + and the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen. -wjw
P: The peace of the Lord be with you always!
C: And also with you!
-or-
All may make the sign of the cross in remembrance of baptism
as the presiding minister begins:
P: In the Name of the Father, and the Son, + and the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen
P: Let us take this time to be honest with God.
(pause)
Forgiving Lord,
C: we come before you with hesitant hearts.
You offer us love enough to forgive all,
yet we deny and rationalize our own sin.
You give us the law so we may see ourselves and repent,
yet we pick and choose what to obey.
You send us your Word to reveal our errors,
yet we use it to lift ourselves up and put others down.
Without your love Lord, we are dead in sin.
Forgive us the sins we know in our heart.
Save us from the sins we hide.
(pause for reflection and self-examination)
P: For all these Lord we are deeply sorry.
C: Amen
P: Our God does indeed love us. So much so that as we are baptized with God’s Holy Spirit our sins may be revealed. So much so that the Father has sent his son: Jesus Christ our Savior. It is for his sake that God decides our transgressions are forgiven and our sin is put away! May we acknowledge this forgiveness in our hearts and declare God’s faithfulness to all the world. In the name of the Father, and the Son, + and the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen -wjw
P: The peace of the Lord be with you always!
C: And also with you!
