Cycle C Lectionary 10 Proper 5

6/9/2013 Confession

Sunday Title: Compassion Sunday
Sermon Title: Who is the Prophet? What does the Prophet say about God?

Previously:
Sunday Title: Faithfulness Sunday
Sermon Title: What is promised to us?

Scripture Cuttings:
1 Kings 17:17-24 “O Lord my God, have you brought calamity even upon the widow with whom I am staying, by killing her son?”
Psalm 30 I will plead to the Lord for mercy: "How will you profit if my blood is shed, if I go into the pit? Will the dust of my body give thanks to you? Will it tell about your truth?" Hear, O Lord, and have pity on me! O Lord, be my helper!
Galatians 1:11-24 “The one who formerly was persecuting us is now proclaiming the faith he once tried to destroy.” And they glorified God because of me.
Luke 7:11-17 “Young man, I say to you, rise!” The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. Fear seized all of them; and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has risen among us!” and “God has looked favorably on his people!”

Confession:
All may make the sign of the cross in remembrance of baptism
as the presiding minister begins:
P:  In the Name of the Father, and the Son, + and the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen

P:  Our God comes to speak with us,
let us prepare ourselves to listen.
    (pause for self-examination)
P:  Compassionate God...
C: You ask us to be your Church.
You show us your compassion.
  You give us your Word.
You feed us with your grace.
      You give us new life.
Still we are not reconizable as your children.
Our actions betray our desires and fears,
    instead of your favor,
      your favor on your people.
Is there a prophet is among us?
Forgive the sins we name before you.
Save us from the sins we hide.
    (Pause for reflection)
P:  Our Lord is master. Master over sin, master over death. For Christ’s sake our sins are forgiven. Christ says to us: “rise!” Rise from our sin, from our fears, from our betrayal. Rise to be the body of Christ; rise now, rise in this world. By the power of the Holy Spirit our proclomation of Christ in word and deed will show our compassionate Lord. All for the glory of the Father, and the Son, + and the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen. -wjw

P:  The peace of the Lord be with you always!
C: And also with you!
